What are Handmade Dice Sets?
It really depends on what you mean by handmade. When it comes to dice production there is hand polished, where the dice are machine poured in a batch then instead of tumbling in a giant vat that rounds off all of the edges, they are polished by hand. Then there is hand poured, meaning that each set is individually poured into a mold by hand then hand polished.
Our handmade dice are hand polished, but not hand poured. If that is an important distinction to you, there are some very fine artisinal dice shops that sell very expensive hand poured sets.
For more information on hand-poured vs hand-polished, see our blog here.
How do I care for my handmade dice?
Much like any dice honestly. They are fairly sturdy but heavy abuse could chip a corner. We ship them in decorative tins, both to give you a lovely way to display your purchase as well as to protect them during shipping. You can roll them on a table, although i often wince when I hear them clatter and much prefer a lined dice box. As for cleaning (I mean who hasn't spilled soda on a gaming table?) a quick rinse with water or even some dish soap is fine.
Are handmade dice balanced?
Ah, the age old balance question. If you want a deep dive into balance in dice, please see our blog here and here. But the short answer is, yes, they are balanced... enough. Casinoes uses sharp edged dice to decrease any irregularities seen with rounded edges. But they also measure their dice with laser micrometers. You're playing a tabletop RPG. Hopefully there's no money on the line. Your life isn't on the line, only the life of your carefully crafted character. These dice will get a nice random roll, probably better than some low quality dice you can find on the web.
Why are sharp edged dice so much more expensive?
The regular resin dice set with rounded edges take a fraction of the time and manpower to produce compared to handmade sets. The round edged dice are polished in a drum in bulk. But the handmade, sharp-edged sets require a person to actually hand polish each surface, shining them up while keeping the edges sharp and beautiful. It's a more epensive (and luxurious) product, hence it is more expensive.
